Linux Administration - Root password - reset (Grub)


  1. Boot system to grub boot menu.

  2. Press <ENTER> during the timer to select a kernel to boot.

  3. Select a kernel and hit 'e' to edit the kernel entry.

  4. Add a 1 to the end of the kernel line in the kernel entry.  When finished hit <ENTER> to accept changes.

  5. Press <b> to immediately boot the system, which will now boot into single user mode.

  6. Once booted to the command prompt, type 'passwd'.  Then change the root password to the new password.

  7. Type "reboot" and boot as normal.


  8. Congratulations! (and much relief)
    Your root password has been changed and you now have full access to your system.
